Locanda Verde....Great Italian Bistro in Tribeca!

Before going to see the amazing band Godspeed You! Black Emperor in Brooklyn this past March for their reunion show, my brother suggested checking out Locanda Verde in Tribeca, a very well reviewed and successful Italian restaurant that has been open for maybe about two years now.

We started out with complimentary foccacia bread, which tasted so amazingly light and pillowy.  It was sooooo delectable that we requested seconds!  The focaccia is topped with caramelized shallots that matched really well with the bread.

Next, we ordered the Fritto Misto, which consisted of fried rock shrimp and clams.  These were fried really well and tasted great.  It came garnished with fried shishito peppers and was served with a tangy dipping sauce.

For my entree I ordered the porchetta sandwich, it's not the traditional porchetta which is in a roll.  This reminded me more of the tender roast pork sandwiches that they have in Philly.  Here at Locanda Verde it's topped with grilled onions and provolone and the meat was tender and juicy.  It also comes with a great salad with lettuce, radicchio, and banana peppers and garnished with fried pork rinds!  Mmmmm porky!

My brother ordered a pasta dish and not an actual entree; the pappardelle pasta with lamb bolognese, ricotta, and mint.  Although the flavors were excellent and it tasted like a homey comfort dish, the flavors were pretty familiar (which could be either good or bad depending on what you're looking for).  The mint was very subdued and unfortunately hardly noticeable.

Unfortunately, their highly touted Maple Budino dessert was rotated out of the menu, and we didn't order their famous sheep's milk ricotta.  Maybe next time....the place is supposed to serve an amazing brunch as well on weekends.  They also serve the sheep's milk ricotta then; just something to ponder...
